Aldborough (23 pts) 105 for 3 beat Shipdham (3 pts) 101 for 10

On a day that turned to sunshine and blue sky Aldborough overcame the pitch and a resilient opposition to secure their third successive league victory on Saturday.

On winning the toss the Greens decided to bowl first and soon this decision was rewarded with Perry-Warnes 10-3-24-2 and Board taking early wickets. Despite dropped catches and some indifferent fielding Shipdham wobbled to 45 for 6. Most destructive was Kevin Bacon who once again sizzled with his performance and finished the innings with figures of 12-4-27-4. A rearguard action from the belligerent Riches helped get the visitors off the hook. Aldborough were  aspects of sloppiness with the ball in hand and some generous field placing. The total of 101 was not a great one but was thirty runs more than the opposition deserved, however Board 10-5-11-2 and Reeve 7-2-17-1 and Dingle 5-1-19-1 supplemented the good work of the more destructive Bacon and Perry-Warnes.

In reply and on a drying wicket Shipdham decided a ‘bodyline’ style attack was their the only chance of victory. This tactic was fruitless as all the batsmen showed composure and control and despite some tricky balls to encounter Boro’ coasted towards victory in good time. The wickets that did fall were down to three pieces of excellent fielding rather than the vagaries of the pitch and it was some very good concentration and application from Fell (24) and Cooper (48no) that took the team within touching distance of the win. It was left to the latter and man of the match Kevin Bacon to calmly take the home side to victory and a share of top spot in the division.

Colney CC V Aldborough A CC

Aldborough A (22 points) 102-7 beat Colney (5 points) 99-9 by 3 wickets

League leaders Aldborough A had a tough time beating Colney in a hard fought, low scoring encounter. With lots of cloud overhead and a damp, green wicket Aldborough won the toss and captain Cannon put Colney in to bat. The decision was soon vindicated as Cannon took a sharp catch to dismiss Burrel in the third over. Ash and Holroyd bowled well for The Greens and Colney struggled to get any momentum going with Holroyd bowling with great skill and Ash generating good pace and movement. In the 12th over Ash struck twice withan LBW and then a looping gloved shot to slip where the ever reliable Fisher snapped up the chance. With Colney reeling at 24-3 it took a resolute innings of 25 from Boldock to add any respectability to the score as wickets fell and runs were very slow in coming. Holroyd bowled through to post figures of 12-3-10-1 and was backed up by five other bowlers all going for under 4 an over. A total of 99-9 after the full 45 overs looked very attainable for a confident Aldborough side.

Aldborough set about the task with good discipline until Swinbourne mistimed a drive and was caught off the bowling of Peck. Mack was looking good and hit a breezy 32 before he too was caught out. Bundock fell early leaving Fisher and Nicholson to steady the ship. They did so well before Fisher was caught at slip. Holroyd was bowled by Carding bringing skipper Cannon to the crease with Aldboroughstill needing 30 to win. A quick 17 from 12 balls from him to back up Nicholson’s 17 off 43 balls took The Greens to the brink before he hit one shot too many and was well caught at fly slip. Ray Smith came in and calmly saw the job through with two excellent leg glances. So it’s three wins out of three for the rejuvenated Aldborough A team in a flying start to the 2009 season.

Next week Aldborough A entertain Rocklands A and The 1sts travel to Hardingham. On Sunday we welcome Felthorpe CC. See you on The Green!
